Chess to launch new pick and pack system

Chess Logistics Technology is launching a new pick and pack system in response to the increased use of the practice in retail distribution and internet fulfilment operations.

It has made extensive changes to its Empirica warehouse management system to increase the flexibility of pick and pack functionality to support simultaneous picking of multiple orders into separate handling media, and reduce handling movements and enables more efficient picking paths.

The company will be exhibiting the solution at Logistics Link South, highlighting the fact that Empirica WMS allows variable PPM (pick and pack media, eg trolley or cage) to be used with a definable capacity of slots or carton spaces.

Chess points out that pick and pack has the potential to eliminate packing desk activity as a separate function. However many operations may also gain major benefits on the picking side as the functionality is ideal for picking multiple small item orders. In the Internet fulfilment environment, which may involve a typical home delivery of one to five items or a smaller retail order, the ability to maximise order pick while minimising picker journeys will deliver significant efficiencies.

It is just one of the new launches that will take place at the exhibition.

Flexi Narrow Aisle is set to unveil a low entry cost customer order picking strategy for grocery retail. It says the Flexi PiCK layer Picking System offers case pick rates of more than 1,000 outers per hour per man.

Co-located with the new Port to Shelf Exhibition, Logistics Link South will be taking place on Tuesday 11th and Wednesday 12th February 2014, at Sandown Park Racecourse.
