Circular solutions for packaging a hit at IntraLogisteX

Among the high-tech automation, robotics and IoT solutions on display at IntraLogisteX today, a water activated tape – also referred to as gummed paper tape – has generated a surprising amount of interest on the Southgate Packaging stand. But after talking with them about the product, it’s easy to see why the company has had a busy morning.

“It is fast becoming the most popular form of carton sealing for companies,” Darren Smith, Head of Marketing at Southgate Packaging (Stand 336) tells Logistics Manager. “Environmentally friendly and creating a superior bond to conventional non-recyclable plastic tapes, it is a must-have in the packaging communities’ race to a circular economy.”

More sustainable packaging and packaging innovations have increased in importance over the pandemic, given the boom in e-commerce. The tape, for example, is already being used by one of the leading internet retailers to replace traditional plastic alternatives. Not only sustainable, it is tamper-proof.

Also on display on the company’s stand is the AirWave. “Our range of Pacplan Airwave air pillow systems and films give a high quality and reliable air cushion which offer a sustainable alternative to classic void fill products,” Smith continues.

Void fill is an invaluable commodity in the packaging sector. “Although we should always endeavour to use the correct size box, void fill can act as an added barrier to keep products safe in transit,” explains Smith. “Traditional forms of void fill include polystyrene foam peanuts and plastic bubble wrap. However, both of these products are incredibly hard to recycle and will end up in landfill taking centuries to degrade.”
