CTL Logistics targets to be the leader in the East – West transport

New strategy for the German market

CTL Logistics` new strategy for the German market is based on the international transport on the East – West axis: from ARA ports to Russia, Ukraine and Belarus. One of the strategic goals is to raise CTL`s market share in Germany up to 5% in 2012. Implementation of the strategy will support the new operational model, similar to airlines‘ Hub and Spoke Systems.

CTL targets a 30% market share in 2012. The key objective is to keep the leadership in being the largest privately owned rail operator on the Polish-German border. In Germany CTL plans to focus on similar segments of transport they successfully operate in in Poland: fuels, chemicals, coal, coke and stone as well as the intermodal transport services.

CTL’s new operational model focuses on the East-West transport axis. Under the current strategy, CTL Express sp.z o.o. was responsible for operations in the domestic market while CTL GmbH handled German services. It basically meant that the geographical border matched the limits of responsibilities of those two undertakings. Starting from Dec 1st, 2009, the operational model within the CTL Group is set to undergo a major change and thus provide CTL clients with a number of unique benefits. The model will be based on the airlines’ Hub-and-Spoke strategies, where goods are transported from hubs to final destinations according to a regular timetable.

Moreover, centralized cross-border train dispatching within the Hub and Spoke system will allow CTL to avoid typical border difficulties ( e.g. poor communication and problematic interfaces) while facilitating the continuous and exact train tracking. Finally, the system will led to maximizing asset utilization and shorten the time of transit. Implementation of the new operational model is coupled with changes in the organizational chart, e.g. integration of production planning and disposition and transfer to Berlin.

In Germany CTL`s market share stands at 1% with the average distance ratio of 313 km. In 1 HY 2009 CTL carried 1 173 thousands of tons and workflow reached 368 422 thousand tkm. The company specializes in transportation of coal, coke, fuels, chemicals and stone and develops intermodal projects. In Poland CTL is the biggest independent rail freight operator with the market share of 10%.
