DB Schenker Austria receives awards for its green initiatives

Innovation prize for the world’s first GreenWarehouse lighting system in Linz • the federal state of Kärnten gives climate protection award to the facility in Klagenfurt

The installation of the world’s first GreenWarehouse lighting system by Philips at the DB Schenker logistics centre in Linz was honored by the Austrian Environmental Ministry with the “EnergieGenie 2015” innovation award. The GreenWarehouse concept combines LED lights with product innovations in the areas of dynamic lighting control and motion sensors to create a sustainable lighting system. Motion sensors in high-bay storage areas ensure lights are only turned on if someone begins walking or driving down a warehouse aisle. The lights activate at lightning speed and then slowly dim after the person has left the aisle.

“The system ensures that we always have full lighting where and when we need it; and it also reduces our CO2 emissions by more than 200 tons and saves more than EUR 40,000 per year,” says Thomas Ziegler, Head of the DB Schenker facility in Linz.

The Austrian federal state of Kärnten has honored the DB Schenker facility in Klagenfurt for its “Die echte NULL-Emission” (True ZERO Emissions) project with second place in the “Air” category of the 2015 Energy Globe Awards. The goal of the DB Schenker project was to eliminate specific CO2 emissions in the city of Klagenfurt.

“Our targeted lowering of transport volumes has allowed us to achieve true ZERO emissions that will lead to a sustained improvement to the climate and air quality in the city of Klagenfurt,” says Klaus Maximilian Hermetter, Head of the DB Schenker facility in Klagenfurt. The construction of a new terminal, which enables the use of alternative routes by local delivery vehicles and long-haulage trucks, has resulted in a more than 76-ton reduction of CO2 emissions. This corresponds to savings of 32,000 liters of heating oil, which is equivalent to the average annual consumption of more than 20 households.

The DB Climate Protection 2020 program is designed to reduce DB Schenker’s specific CO2 emissions (transport-related) by 20 per cent between 2006 and 2020. “The awards presented for two innovative climate protection projects at two DB Schenker facilities show that we have moved a major step closer to achieving this goal in Austria,” says Kurt Leidinger, CEO of DB Schenker Logistics in Austria and South East Europe.
