DB Schenker forwards streetcars as air freight to Turkey

“Express transport“: Mega freighter Antonov AN 225 flies streetcars weighing tonnes from China to Turkey on behalf of DB Schenker

In a record time of two weeks, the experts of DB Schenker have organised the transport of two streetcars from China to Turkey. The 77 tonnes, 19,80 metres long wagons of the Chinese CNR Tangshan Railway Vehicle Co. Ltd were carried from Shijiazhuang, China to Samsun, Turkey. The tight time frame only allowed for air freight. Instead of the usual preoperational period of two months planning until delivery had to take place within two weeks’ time.

For this transport the world’s largest freight aircraft was used – Antonov AN 225. This was the first time a streetcar was loaded to an AN 225. Within the shortest time DB Schenker’s project and airfreight units in China and Turkey prepared everything necessary to carry the streetcars by truck from the manufacturing factory to the airport of Shijiazhuang and eventually to the customer in Samsun.

The DB Schenker organisation Karpeles Flight Services GmbH has used the AN 225 for an international transport for the first time. Together with Antonov Airlines they organised loading and securing of the heavyweight streetcars and ensured punctual handling, landing and secure arrival at the destination.
