DB Schenker implements a new logistics centre in St. Pölten

EUR 11 million total investment: DB Schenker Logistics triples its total occupied space in Lower Austria, creating capacity for 100 new jobs

During a special groundbreaking ceremony on 10 December, DB Schenker and St. Pölten Mayor Matthias Stadler officially launched the construction of a new logistics center in Lower Austria’s capital city.

The new facility will consist of a 1,200 m² office building, a 5,000 m² logistics warehouse with high-rack and block-stacking areas, and a 2,000 m² crossdocking/ transshipment section.

The center will utilize all the latest safety standards and feature state-of-the-art IT solutions. While planning the facility, DB Schenker also focused closely on environmental protection and CO2 optimization aspects. For example, once it begins operating, the new center will be almost completely climate neutral and use an LED lighting system that adapts to natural light conditions. It will also have its own rail siding to ensure environmentally friendly freight transport by train. DB Schenker is investing a total of  EUR 11 million in the new logistics center, which will be completed relatively quickly and go into operation in the summer of 2015.

“This new facility will not only enable us to meet the requirements of our customers and suppliers in the best possible way; it will also boast outstanding environmental protection and CO2 optimization features,” said Kurt Leidinger, CEO of DB Schenker Logistics in Austria and South East Europe, during the groundbreaking ceremony.

Short communication/transport paths and fast processes will be ensured not only by state-of-the-art IT solutions for stocktaking but also by an integrated freight-forwarding terminal that will create a direct link between the logistics warehouse and the crossdocking terminal. In addition, a brine/water heat pump will ensure that the temperature in the warehouse never exceeds 25 degrees Celsius in the summer or falls below eight degrees Celsius in the winter. This will enable the storage of temperature-sensitive items such as beverages and electronic components.

In order to optimally protect all warehoused goods, the new facility will also utilize the latest safety standards in line with the European TAPA (Transported Asset Protection Association) requirements. Everything needed for TAPA certification will therefore be in place when the logistics center opens.
