DB Schenker launches block train from Hungary to Piraeus

Reduced transport time: New rail solution by DB Schenker Logistics establishes Greek port of Piraeus as additional hub for Europe

A new transport solution from DB Schenker has made the Greek port of Piraeus the new gateway for commodity flows between Asia and Europe. The combination of ship and container train reduces the transport time for clients between the two continents by more than seven days. This also benefits the environment: CO2 emissions are reduced by 20 per cent thanks to the new route.

Since the end of November, DB Schenker has been operating via rail in the opposite direction, from Hungary to Piraeus. “This new route is an interesting alternative for full container loads bound for the Greek market and for exports from Central Europe to the Far East (e.g. China) or to Africa”, the company states in its press release.

“With our new rail solution, we offer businesses the solutions they need to take full advantage of the strategic advantages offered by the port of Piraeus. Both importers and exporters can reduce their transport times and organize their supply chains to and from Asia more effectively, which also contributes significantly to CO2 emissions reduction,” says Mag. Helmut Schweighofer, Board Member of DB Schenker Logistics in Austria and South East Europe.

Numerous clients are interested in the new solution; for example, a large Japanese electronics concern already relies on the sea transport to Piraeus and on the regular DB Schenker block train from Piraeus to Hungary.

The Greek port also offers importers advantages for the import turnover tax. Through an agreement with the EU Commission, goods which are imported into the European internal market via Piraeus must only be taxed when they pass to the end consumer.
