DB Schenker Logistics: More ocean freight with less air freight

Deutsche Bahn group felt the consequences of the economic slowdown in cargo transport in the first half of the year 2012

Rail cargo transport of the Deutsche Bahn group reflected the economic slowdown in Europe. In the period from January to June 2012 cargo volume transported on the railway declined 2.6 per cent or 5.5 million tonnes to 202.3 million tonnes. Transport performance fell by 4.9 per cent to 54 billion ton kilometers (tkm), as the enterprise announced when presenting its figures for the first half of the year last week.

In the face of a difficult market environment, the DB Schenker Logistics business unit recorded a marginal gain of 0.5 per cent in the number of shipments in European land transport, which rose to 47.8 million shipments. In contrast, volumes of air freight carried fell by 7.9 per cent, while volumes of ocean freight transported developed far more favorably posting a substantial gain of 10.6 per cent compared to the first six months of 2011.

During the presentation of the first half results in Berlin Rüdiger Grube, CEO and Chairman of the Management Board of DB AG, stated that: “The first six months were very successful for DB.” DB’s revenues increased by 3.3 per cent to EUR 19.5 billion during the first half of 2012. Adjusted results from operations (adjusted EBIT) surged by 16.6 per cent, to EUR 1.3 billion. Despite economic uncertainties DB’s head remains confident for the full year 2012.
