DB Schenker Logistics signs 5-year contract with Spirit AeroSystems

Schenker Logistics has signed a five-year contract to operate a 3PL warehouse, a TMS load centre and provide lead logistics activities at Spirit AeroSystems‘ greenfield start-up located in Kinston, North Carolina.

Spirit’s employees at the new facility in Kinston will build the composite centre section of the fuselage and the front spars for the aircraft’s wings for the Airbus A350XWB, which is being assembled at Spirit’s facility in St. Nazaire, France.

The partnership began in April and will be patterned after a similar project that DB Schenker operates for Spirit in Wichita, Kansas.

The scope of work includes product receipt and put away; pick, pack, and sequenced line feed to point-of-use locations. The warehouse will deploy voice pick, advanced kitting, visual line side management as well as automated POD functionality.

According to Schenker Logistics chief operating officer David Bouchard, the company’s successful relationship with Spirit has enabled the replication of many of the manufacturing principles that were developed for the Wichita program, and consequently has enabled Schenker to consolidate inventory and improve visibility whilst reducing inventory costs.

At its maturity, it is estimated that forty full-time DB Schenker employees will work at the new Kinston facility.

Wichita-based Spirit AeroSystems is the world’s largest independent supplier of commercial aircraft assemblies and components, and provides aftermarket customer support services, including spare parts, maintenance/repair/overhaul, and fleet support services in North America, Europe and Asia.
