Decline in cargo throughput at Wiener Hafen

Car terminal at Wiener Hafen port reached respectable increase in volumes in 2009

In total the Wiener Hafen and the companies located at the port handled around 11 million tons in 2009. This equals a decline of 1.5 million tons compared on 2008. The shipping segment made up around 1 million tons of goods thereof. In 2008 this item amounted to 1.5 million tons. Registering a container throughput of 291,000 TEU in 2009, the head of the port Walter Edinger is satisfied; despite a down of more than 13 per cent on 2008.

However growth was registered at the Wiener Hafen car terminal Freudenau, where 10,000 parking slots (2,500 of them covered) are available. With a throughput of 77,000 units, the figure of the previous year (about 60,000 vehicles) was clearly exceeded.

Between 2006 and 2009 Wiener Hafen and the Austrian railway company ÖBB invested around EUR 120 million into the expansion and modernisation of the facilities. From this amount around EUR 40 million were invested to the port and EUR 60 million were spent for measures to improve the rail connection of the port. The new harbour gate will be ready for use from April. The final completion is scheduled for mid-2010.
