Demand in Europe for new cars drops 7.1% in January

In January, demand for new cars dropped by 7.1% in the EU, compared to the same month a year earlier.

In total, 968,769 new registrations were recorded in the region, with on average one more working day than in January 2011 (see Ti Dashboard – Car Registrations: Europe).

Registrations varied per market: in Germany and the UK demand for new cars remained stable at -0.4% and 0.0% respectively. In France and Italy registrations fell by -20.7% and -16.9%. The biggest contraction was noted in Portugal (-47.4%) and the largest increase in Romania (+86.4%).

For the full year 2011, the number of new registrations totalled 13,111,209 units, a 1.7% decline compared with 2010.
