DHL Express puts up new service centre in Styria

EUR 5 million total investment: New building at DHL Express-site in Peggau allows for a more efficient and resource-conserving shipments handling from this autumn

DHL Express Austria has turned the first sod to officially start the construction works of the new site in Peggau on March 10. In 2013 the express service provider had decided to join its two Styrian locations in Werndorf and St. Michael respectively, at one modern service centre in the municipality, in order to strengthen the Austrian network and improve Styria’s connection to national and international markets. After completion of the new building in September 2014, more than 314 tonnes of CO2 can be saved annually thanks to joining the locations.

The construction project budgeted with a total investment of EUR 5 million is implemented together with the proprietor of the premises and investor Philipp Sager. The easily accessible area at the motorway junction Peggau-Deutschfeistritz in the north of Graz allows fort faster connection to the national transhipment area of DHL Express in Linz and the Linz Hörsching airport, as well as towards Richtung Bruck an der Mur.

Ralf Schweighöfer, Country Manager of DHL Express Austria, confirmed the decision for this location: “Peggau offers ideal conditions for the construction of a new service centre for Styria. The building is designed to meet our requirements perfectly and allows for a more efficient and resource-conserving management of growing shipment volumes. More advantages result from optimised processes in the warehouse and on the road.“ In the future 65 tours will be operated to connect companies in Styria and beyond within a shorter time to international markets.

The new location permits for a more economic operation of the transport routes in general. Truck traffic will decline compared to the current situation by 17 per cent, the number of delivery tours by 9 per cent. “In liner haulage – the liner network linking our stations to the hub in Linz – this will be 133,000 kilometres per year“, says Ralf Schweighöfer. Moreover the energy-saving building technology will save more than 58 per cent of resources compared to the previous consumption.

From the 900 DHL Express employees across Austria, about 100 persons will be working at the new site in the new service centre in Styria. Helmut Michael Salomon, mayor of the city, is glad about the new site: „I am welcoming DHL Express’ decision to come to Peggau and will thus count among the most important employers of our municipality. On the one hand, this confirms our geographic and economic attractiveness, and on the other hand the move of DHL Express also promotes our economic force and the location development.“
