DynaLiners reports Hamburg-Le Havre range container year

Ports in the Hamburg-Le Havre range: Rotterdam, Antwerp and Hamburg saw their market shares go up in the year 2014

2014 turned out to be a very good “container year” for the Port of Rotterdam; in terms of year-on-year growth, market share as well as growth since the economic crisis started.

In 2014, finally, the aggregated throughput of the six main container ports in the Hamburg‐Le Havre range surpassed the 40 million TEU threshold, thanks to a year‐on‐year increase of 4%. All ports except for one, Bremerhaven, saw their throughput rise during the year. Rotterdam noted the highest increase (5.8%), as in the fourth quarter Hamburg (5.1%) suffered from the effects of the Russian boycott.

With the different growth rates, there obviously were changes in the various port’s shares of the total Hamburg‐Le Have range throughput. Le Havre, Zeebrugge and Bremerhaven saw their market shares go down and the other three went up.

“Since their 2008 zenith, only four of the six ports handled more boxes in 2014 than they did six years earlier. Hamburg and Zeebrugge are still below that peak. With a (six‐year) increase of 14%, Rotterdam is the clear winner in the region,” DynaLiners reports.
