„Economic motor Danube“ drives the region around Ennshafen

Lower and Upper Austria’s industry met at the economic site Ennshafen to discuss further projects:

New projects around the Danube port Ennshafen, the hub between Upper and Lower Austria, are in the pipeline. The EU’s strategy for the Danube region, which was adopted on 24 June 2011 by the European Council, enables the region to use growth potentials for industry, ecology and tourism through innovative projects. Mag. Christian Steindl, Managing Director Ennshafen OÖ GmbH, sees particular potential for economic growth for the region in developing waterside throughput on the Danube waterway. The focus lies on expanding trade relations to the Black Sea region as well as with Turkey, as Steindl emphasises in the interview with the Austrian transport magazine Österreichische Verkehrszeitung. To this end also the hinterland connection shall be improved also the Land Styria, with regard to the goods flows coming from Turkey via the port of Koper and are further forwarded on the railway to the Danube.

“In the first half of the year 2011 the container terminal handled 148,183 TEU (+ 44% compared to 2010). As for water/land throughput, we could slightly increase on last year’s level, in spite of the considerable decline in throughput in January, which had been due to the tanker accident on the Rhine. The throughput volume amounts currently to 292,000 tons (+ 1% compared to 2010),“ Steindl gives some figures to underline the significance of the Ennshafen port for the strongly export-oriented economic region Upper Austria.
