Eleven per cent more cargo handled in the seaports of Lower Saxony

Cargo throughput in the seaports of Lower Saxony showed clearly uptrend in the first six months of 2012
 
Seaport transport business in Lower Saxony is looking back on a successful first half of the year 2012. Compared to the first six months of the year 2011 cargo throughput rose 11 per cent to 24.683 million tons. several sites recorded double-digit growth.
 
Sea cargo throughput in the port of Brake amounted to 3.036 million tonnes in the reporting period. This means a year-on-year increase of 13 per cent. In particular throughput of agricultural products such as grain (+ 19 % / 320,840 tonnes in the first half of 2012) and fodder (+ 8 % / 1.226 million tonnes in the first half of 2012) contributed to this result. Also steel throughput developed positively in the first half of the year 2012 with 339,759 tonnes. The project loads division, which includes components of the wind power industry, registered a considerable growth of 61,300 tonnes.
 
The port of Emden registered a sea cargo throughput volume of 2.225 million tonnes, which means a plus of 1 per cent compared to the previous year’s period. Still successful is the automobile throughput division with 628,711 vehicles (+ 1%). Throughput of wind power components rose 13 per cent to 90,321 tonnes (80,218 tonnes in the first half of 2011). Throughput of solid bulk such as building materials or fodder amounted to 477,344 tonnes (+ 41 %).
 
In the seaport of Wilhelmshaven throughput rose 22 per cent to 13.196 million tonnes in the first six months of 2012, which is mainly due to strong increases in their three main goods groups: liquid bulk, solid bulk and general cargo.
