Energy wasted in warehouses costs £75m

SMEs in the warehouse sector are overspending by over £75 million a year on their energy bills as a result of inefficient technology and old equipment, according to a study by the Energy Efficiency Financing scheme.

The EEF scheme has analysed the energy spending of selected industries to estimate their annual energy overspend, focusing on use of lighting, heating and hot water, cooling and ventilation, and other areas of energy consumption.

The study reveals that potential energy savings of over £414 million could be achieved each year by service sector SMEs – and £75m of that is in the warehousing sector.

The EEF scheme, a joint initiative between the Carbon Trust and Siemens Financial Services, aims to make finance for the acquisition of energy-efficient and renewable energy equipment more accessible and affordable for companies, in particular SMEs.
