FedEx and UPS suspend service out of Yemen

Following the detection of explosive material in two airfreight packages originating in Yemen and destined for an address in Chicago, UPS and FedEx have suspended all services out of Yemen until further notice.

FedEx has also announced that it is not accepting shipments to Yemen.

One of the suspect packages was intercepted on board a UPS aircraft at UK’s East Midlands airport and the other at the FedEx facility in Dubai.

Qatar Airlines has confirmed that the suspect package discovered in Dubai had been transported on two separate passenger aircraft before being found by security staff. The package was transported on a passenger aircraft from Yemen to Qatar, where it was transferred to another passenger aircraft for the flight to Dubai.

Thereafter, the authorities in Yemen confiscated another 24 suspect packages for examination.

UK Prime Minister David Cameron confirmed that packages coming into or through the UK via airfreight from Yemen had been immediately stopped.

UPS also confirmed that the authorities detained three aircraft and related cargo for investigation, two aircraft in Philadelphia and one in Newark, all of which were subsequently cleared by the TSA.

Both FedEx and UPS are cooperating fully with the FBI and local authorities.
