Cargo City Süd: modern and enlarged access to security controlled apron for cargo handler

Fraport AG has upgraded infrastructure for cargo handling at Frankfurt airport: A new neutral cargo handling area in the Cargo City Süd was inaugurated on August 26. “With this new loading terminal we created a highly modern, automated infrastructure for efficient freight handling at our airport.“ This offer addresses companies handling air freight, but do not have handling areas on the apron.“, confirms Anke Giesen, CEO Ground Handling, Fraport AG.

The neutral cargo handling area is a facility of the central infrastructure of the Frankfurt airport, where cargo can be handled between land and air transport Integration of the mandatory security control into the handling area is a novelty at the Frankfurt airport.

About one tenth of the cargo volume at the Frankfurt airport had been handled via the previous neutral cargo handling area. In total about 200,000 cargo units will be handled in 2013 via the four automated locks. They can handle a maximum of 64 freight units per hour. The docking system for trucks is automatically adjusting to each vehicle, the cargo can be unloaded at the push of a button. Afterwards the cargo is safety controlled and provided for further transport by aircraft on an area that has recently been expanded from about 25,000 m² to 31,000 m². A future expansion of the handling area by six more locks is possible on demand, in addition the provision area can be enlarged as well.
