From 1 April 2014: New toll for trucks in the United Kingdom

Great Britain introduces a time-dependent toll charge for foreign lorries with gross vehicle weight 12 tonnes or more

On 1 April 2014 a new time-dependent toll charge for heavy goods vehicles (HGV) with gross vehicle weight 12 tonnes or more will be introduced in the United Kingdom. This is the first time foreign trucks using the British roads will have to pay a levy, informs the Austrian association Arbeitsgemeinschaft Internationaler Straßenverkehrsunternehmer Österreichs (AISÖ) in a press release.

The charge is pursuant to the law of the European Union, allowing levy amounts that vary according to the vehicle’s weight and axle configuration. There will be seven toll rates, adjusted to the current VED rates (Vehicle Excise Duty, vehicle tax on UK registered trucks). Vehicles must make levy payments before entering the UK. Failure to pay the new levy will be attracting a £300 fixed penalty notice, or seizure of the vehicle.

Daily levy rates range from 1.70 GBP to 10 GBP; the annual rate ranges from 85 GBP to 1,000 GBP, depending on the type of vehicle, its axle configuration and weight. Notwithstanding, the selected period of payment the levy is valid from 00:00:00 to 23:59:59.

The charge can be paid online with a customer or credit card. Tank cards will be accepted as well. A limited number of point of sale terminals on ferries and truck stops will be established for payment in cash or by credit card. To accelerate and simplify these processes, payment channels for transport enterprises and booking agents will be available from 17 March 2014 including an online payment portal.
