DB Schenker: contract logistics reported a strong increase in 2013

Transport and logistics segment of the Deutsche Bahn group felt the consequences of the difficult economic situation in 2013

In the 2013 financial year the transport and logistics segment of the Deutsche Bahn group stood still in most divisions due to the economy.

DB Schenker Logistics’ contract logistics, reporting a strong increase in revenues of 5.2 per cent to EUR 1.84 billion, had been a bright spot.

On the contrary, the decreased demand for transport services due to the economy had a negative effect on the development of the rail freight segment, resulting in a 1.5 per cent decline in transport volume to 104.3 billion tonne kilometres, while turnover dropped by about 2 per cent or EUR 100 million.

DB Schenker Logistics‘ shipment volume in European land transport increased by 0.2 per cent to 95.5 million shipments, whereas air freight volume decreased slightly by 0.3 per cent to 1.09 million tonnes. Ocean freight also saw a decline of 0.7 per cent, to 1.89 million TEU.

Negative currency effects caused turnover to decline by 3.5 per cent or about EUR 530 million. On the same basis DB Schenker Logistics had to face losses of about EUR 200 million or 1.2 per cent.

At EUR 39.1 billion, revenues in the 2013 fiscal year remained at the level of the previous year (EUR 39.3 billion). The adjusted EBIT declined by EUR 472 million (-17.4 per cent) to EUR 2.2 billion. Net investment was largely unchanged and, at EUR 3.4 billion in 2013, was EUR 75 million lower than the previous year. Net financial debt remained stable at EUR 16.4 billion.

Even though DB was only able to partially reach its economic goals in 2013, there was encouraging progress made in the DB2020 strategy. More than 11,000 employees were hired last year, along with an additional 4,000 new vocational trainees and cooperative education students.
