Gebrüder Weiss and Rail Cargo Group heading for the BeNeLux ports

Taurus locomotive “Bodensee“ to operate in the corporate design of Gebrüder Weiss and Rail Cargo Group from now; Expansion of the cargo terminal in Wolfurt to start before the end of this year

With a symbolic christening of the locomotive the Gebrüder Weiss forwarding company and the Rail Cargo Group celebrated their long-standing cooperation at the freight terminal Wolfurt on May 23. With immediate effect a 10,000-hp Taurus electric locomotive in cooperate design of Gebrüder Weiss and Rail Cargo Group is operated in the European railway network. Heidi Senger-Weiss, chairwoman of Gebrüder Weiss, and Georg Kasperkovitz (executive board member of Rail Cargo Group) christened the train on the name Bodensee (Lake Constance).

„We are proud of ‚our‘ locomotive – this is a visible sign that Gebrüder Weiss and the railway belong together. We also move cargo by rail. In the transfer of freight traffic to the railway, the Rail Cargo Group is our most important partner in Austria,“ said Heinz Senger-Weiss in his speech in front of around 100 guests.

The cooperation of Gebrüder Weiss and Rail Cargo Group was extended for another three years at the start of 2014. This shall boost the shift of freight transport to the railway in the future. The focus is particularly on container transport between Wolfurt and the German North Sea ports of Hamburg and Bremerhaven. In addition, links to the Benelux ports are being created. „The Rail Cargo Group focuses on long-term partnerships in the rail logistics sector, in order to strengthen rail freight transport in Europe,“ said Georg Kasperkovitz.

A signboard of previous cooperation of Gebrüder Weiss and Rail Cargo was the block train „Orange Combi Cargo“ (OCC) with a daily rail link from Vienna to Vorarlberg vv, and the “Sprinter” between Hamburg and Lake Constance, connecting Wolfurt and the German seaports. Through the cooperation of Gebrüder Weiss and Rail Cargo more than 10,000 shipments per year will be shifted from road to rail.

As part of the celebrations, the participants could gain an idea of the upcoming renovation of the Wolfurt freight terminal. To be able to cope with the ever-growing cargo volumes in the Vorarlberg transport industry, the infrastructure will be adjusted from the end of 2014. The terminal is one of the most important hubs in freight transport in Austria and supports the logistics chain of export-oriented economy Vorarlberg.
