Gebrüder Weiss Group plans to close gaps in Western Balkans

Gebrüder Weiss Group is further pursuing the expansion of locations and infrastructures in Central and Eastern Europe in 2009. In Bucharest a new location offering 8,000 square metres of logistics area, about 2,500 square metres for throughput and 1,600 square metres for offices will start operating in spring. The facility is being constructed with a total investment of around EUR 12 million. Moreover, the group plans to expand the locations in Arad and Sibiu (both in Romania), to implement an own facility in Senec in Slovakia and to acquire premises in Croatia and Serbia.

At a press conference in Vienna Chief Executive Officer Wolfgang Niessner announced the group’s aim to fill blank spots on the Western Balkans. The group plans to establish locations in Albania, Macedonia, Montenegro and in the Republic of Moldova before 2010. Total investments of the globally acting provider of transport and logistics services, headquartered in Lauterach (in the Austrian province Vorarlberg), will amount to EUR 34 million in 2009.

In the financial year 2008 Gebrüder Weiss employed 4,500 persons at 137 locations and achieved a net turnover of EUR 990 million, which is 4.5 per cent more than in 2007. About 28 percent of the added value (gross profit) was generated in international land transport, followed by logistics with 26 percent, CEP (courier, express, parcel) and Air&Sea with each 13 percent, national traffics with 12 per cent and customs and consulting (inet-logistics, xIvise innovative logistics) with 5 and 3 percent, respectively. The forwarded volume amounted to 7.6 million consignments. Cash flow clearly beat the mark of EUR 50 million.
