Austrian Post records growth in Parcel & Logistics Division

Big demand for premium parcel service of Österreichische Post (Austrian Post)

In spite of considerably decreasing volumes of B2C-standard parcels in Austria, the Parcel & Logistics division of the Österreichische Post AG (Austrian Post) showed a stable business development in 2008. Compared to 2007, turnover rose 6.4 per cent to EUR 785.9 million. Earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortisation (EBITDA) amounted to EUR 34.8 million (2007: EUR 46.5 million). The Management Board traces this decline back to loosing two large parcel dispatch customers, the costs for the integration of new branches in the Netherlands and Belgium, and increased fuel and transport costs.

“In the Parcel & Logistics Division impairments were mainly carried out for goodwill and customer relations of the acquired branches of the trans-o-flex group at a total amount of EUR 33.4 million. This results in a negative EBIT of EUR 25.5 million in 2008“, stated the Management in the annual report of 2008.

The product line named “Premium-Paket” (parcel delivery to private and business customers within 24 hours) had been the driver for the growth in the Parcel & Logistics Division of Austrian Post. The turnover of the division increased by 12.6 percent to EUR 659.6 million. Specialising in pharmaceutical logistics, combined freight and temperature-controlled transports the trans-o-flex subsidiary achieved a turnover of around EUR 500 million. East and south-eastern Europe generated about EUR 60 million of the division turnover.

Taking the Mail and Branch Network Divisions into consideration, the Österreichische Post achieved a turnover of EUR 2.44 billion in 2008 (+ 5.4%). Earnings before taxes and interests improved by 4.1 per cent to EUR 169.5 million. Last year the group employed 27.002 persons on average.
