Gefco Germany opens new office in the ferry port of Sassnitz-Mukran

To boost multimodal services towards the East: Gefco Germany opens a new office in the railway ferry port of Sassnitz-Mukran

Gefco Germany, a specialist for industrial logistics, is expanding its intermodal transport focussed on railway transport from and towards Russia and Central Asia. Therefore the company has opened a new office in the ferry port of Sassnitz-Mukran. The new location is the most western cargo rail station of the Transsiberian railway, at the geographically shortest distance to Scandinavia, Finland, Russia and the Baltic States.

Moreover Sassnitz-Mukran is Germany’s biggest railway ferry port and the only port location in Western Europe that has tracks of both gauges: rail wagons can be reloaded in five halls from Russian broad gauge to normal gauge or the other way. Sassnitz-Mukran has also ideal connections for land transhipment – to the European railway as well as to the road network.

“Rail transport is the best mode to carry heavy cargo. These include project cargo of large machinery and facilities as well as steel transport. The goods are carried on a rail ferry to the Russian port of Ust-Luga near St. Petersburg, from where they are directly transported to their destination without reloading. This becomes possible with the week-end liner services to Baltijsk and Ust Luga“, informs Gefco Germany.

“The opening of the office in the Sassnitz-Mukran ferry port was a strategically important step to intensify eastbound traffic“, says Jörg Rogge, director sales and marketing of the German branch. This allows also to offer new relations and respond more flexible to customer requirements.
