GLS Austria open Eco Depot in Vorarlberg

Following a construction period of six months, GLS Austria, a parcel logistics company, will officially connect their environmentally friendly depot in Rankweil to the network. The location built with an EUR 3.5 million investment is a gateway to Switzerland and provides five charging stations for the planned use of electric vehicles.

“With the new building, we are increasing our presence in this region and are ready for further growth in volume in Vorarlberg and Switzerland,” says Dr. Axel Spörl, General Manager of GLS Austria.

It is mainly the increase in B2C consignments, also to Switzerland, that drives the parcel delivery business. In addition to shoes and cosmetics, fashion jewelry is also popular among the Swiss. Consignors benefit from the collective customs clearance offered by GLS.

The depot with 38 instead of previously 20 gates for delivery vehicles, and four more docking stations for loading and unloading of long-haul trucks, allows handling around 2,500 parcels per hour. The surface was doubled to 5,571 m². In addition to the large handling area, modern offices, recreation rooms and social rooms for employees, transport partners and delivery drivers were built.

Thanks to light strips on the ceiling and a combined heat pump and floor heating, the location consumes little energy and at the same time offers bright rooms with pleasant temperatures. “Sustainability can also improve working conditions,” says Axel Spörl.
