Great Britain planning to introduce truck toll

United Kingdom: HGVs at or above 12 tonnes to be charged with time-based toll from April 1, 2014

On September 26, 2013, the British Department for Transport announced their intention of introducing a charge, which will apply to all HGVs at or above 12 tonnes, with the start of April 2014. Northgate Public Services has been appointed, and will be responsible for the design, build, finance, operation and maintenance of a payment system for the levy.

Charge will be time-based and can be paid per day or per year. The payment system will allow purchasing the levy through a number of sales channels including online, telephone and at point of sale terminals. There will be no vignette, as in other states.

The charge will be calculated according to levy bands which align with existing Vehicle Excise Duty (VED) bands of the vehicles. The levy rate paid will be reflecting vehicle weight and axle configuration.
