Green logistics at Austrian Post became a trend

Also in 2016, Austrian Post delivered all consignments CO2-neutrally in Austria. TÜV Austria, which is evaluating the calculation of CO2 emissions and their compensation, confirmed this for the sixth time in a row.

The Post announced this confirmation to their customers on 15 May in a festive event in the Gobelinsaal room of the Ministry of Environment. Peter Umundum, Member of the Board for Parcel & Logistics at the Austrian Post, and Robert Thaler, Head of the Mobility Department at the Federal Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry, Environment and Water, presented certificates on the compensation of CO2 emissions to the representatives of many post-trade customers .

In 2011 Austrian Post launched the “CO2-neutral” initiative, in order to gradually reduce the ecological footprint of the company. Both the company’s energy and fuel consumption are reduced continuously, and investments are made into clean energy. With the support of the “klimaaktiv mobil” funding program of the Ministry of Environment and the Federal Government’s climate and energy funds, the Post has already invested more than EUR 14 million into e-mobility, and currently has a fleet of more than 1,400 electric vehicles, and which is continuously expanded.

With photovoltaic plants in Vienna-Inzersdorf and Allhaming, the company produces around 1.4 million kilowatt hours of eco-electricity annually, and exclusively green electricity from Austria is bought in addition. Through these and other efficiency measures, Post has been able to significantly reduce its CO2 emissions from around 100,000 tonnes to almost 70,000 tonnes per year, over the last seven years.

Since 2011, the company has been compensating for emissions that can not yet be avoided by supporting national and international climate protection projects. In total, this was about half a million tonnes of CO2.

The initiative of Post meet an enormous response from customers. More than 130 registered companies already use the green logo for CO2-neutrally delivered shipments on their parcels, thus showing the climate protection initiative of the logistics provider.

Overall, Post has awarded around 3,600 certificates to its customers over the past six years; also this year around 400 certificates were awarded. More than 40 companies had the certificates taken over personally, including UNITO, Metro Cash & Carry, A1 Telecom, Haberkorn, Conrad, Eduscho, ÖAMTC and Regionalmedien Austria.
