Hafen Hamburg benefits from strong rail corridor to Austria
Competing with Rotterdam, Antwerp, Trieste and Koper, the Port of Hamburg has a strong position in the seaport hinterland transport by rail. The port can look back on a long tradition in this context of rail transport.
“More and more decision-makers realise that 98 percent of the transports to and from Austria is handled on the environmentally friendly rail. This is a time when the ecological footprint per container is important, or even a decisive advantage,” said Axel Mattern, CEO Port of Hamburg Marketing (HMM), in a statement on the occasion of the traditional port evening on May 3 in Vienna. The event at the winery Wolff in Neustift am Walde was attended by around 250 guests from Austrian shipping agencies, freight forwarders, logistics service providers, rail companies, operators, container trucking companies and inland ports.
Last year the Port of Hamburg was passed by around 3 million tonnes of goods with point of departure or destination in Austria. Accounting for 296,000 TEU, or 42 percent of Austria’s total volume in container traffic, the north German seaport maintained his leading position in the segment of containerised sea freight. The current offer of seaport hinterland transport by rail comprises 80 to 90 weekly container trains.
Hamburg operates as a universal port offering specialised service concepts for bulk cargo or conventional cargo and project logistics operations. The Vienna HMM office currently headed by Alexander Till was founded 66 years ago.
