Hamburg Süd group affected by the economic crisis in 2009

Worldwide acting shipping group Hamburg Süd posts first decline of the transport volume

The global financial and economic crisis has also affected the business figures of the Hamburg Süd group in the year 2009. Compared on the previous year, the enterprise, which includes also the Brazilian shipping company Alianca, registered a 13 per cent-decline of the transport volume of their liner services to 2.3 million TEU. Turnover dropped 28.3 per cent to EUR 3.19 billion due to the decrease in volumes and the equally decreased freight rates. “Also bulk goods and product tanker shipping registered a fierce decline after the boom in the years 2007 and 2008. However they posted still positive results“, as the parent company, the Oetker group announces in their hot-of-the-press annual report. In total the shipping group closed the year with a loss amounting to a low double digit million amount. In the current year the Management expects rising turnovers and a positive result.

More than 50 vessels were deployed in the tramp segment and about 100 in the liner shipping business.
