Hapag-Lloyd shipping company achieves impressive turnaround

Recovery of the world economy led to a considerable increase in transport volumes and a record result for the Hapag-Lloyd shipping company in 2010

The Hamburg-based shipping company Hapag-Lloyd profited in the past financial year 2010 from the positive industrial trend and achieved a record result. Transport volumes grew 7 per cent compared to the previous year to 4.95 million TEU. This increase resulted from a positive development on all major trade lanes. Transport volume on the Atlantic routes increased 8 per cent to 1.14 million TEU compared to the previous year. Volumes on the services from and to Latin America grew 18 per cent in the same period to 1.08 million TEU. On the Far East routes they transported 1.1 million TEU, which is 6 per cent more than in 2009. Transpacific volume rose 11 per cent to 1.09 million TEU. Whereas Austral-Asian routes show a 18 per cent decline in volumes to 532,000 TEU. They renounced non-profitable volumes on these routes, as the management states in a press release.

According to preliminary figures the group turnover soared up 39 per cent compared to the previous year to EUR 6.2 billion in the 2010 business year. Operational result (EBIT) grew to EUR 583 million (2009: minus EUR 603 million), which resulted in an EBIT margin of 9.4 per cent. “The result of the 2010 business year is a clear evidence for the company’s capability to profit from the positive industrial development. The strong operative performance as well as the joint effort of all staff helped Hapag-Lloyd to emerge stronger from the 2009 crisis“, Michael Behrendt, CEO Hapag-Lloyd AG, sums up.
