HHLA starts new expansion programme

New mega-ship berths for HHLA-Terminal Burchardkai in Hamburg

Additional handling facilities for containerships of the future Panamax size are to be created at HHLA Container Terminal Burchardkai (CTB) by the end of 2012. Following an invitation to tender throughout Europe, in January 2009 the Hamburg Port Authority (HPA) awarded the contract for the expansion of Berths 3 and 4 at CTB. By the end of 2012 four high-performance berths on a quay wall to accommodate the heaviest loads will accordingly be available on the north side of Waltershofer Hafen along a total length of 1,470 metres.

Hamburger Hafen und Logistik AG (HHLA) will be equipping the new section of the quay wall to facilitate achievement of maximum attainable handling performance. “The new berths at HHLA Container Terminal Burchardkai are an important milestone in enabling us to offer our international shipping company clientele an adequate number of berths for mega-ships”, says Dr. Stefan Behn, Member of the HHLA Executive Board.
