When Shippers open their transportation network

BT (formerly British Telecom) operates a regular transport network to supply its regional distri-bution centres. New targets for improved sustainability across BT as a whole call for a larger contribution from its transport arm to the improvement of environmental performance and the reduction of the impact of its activity on society.

As a result, BT has opened up its transport network for others to use, thus improving overall utilisation. BT publishes its transport movements an online platform, via which inquiries to share a vehicle can be sent to them. The system is already proving very popular – earlier fears that external shippers would not have confidence in a system where their loads were mixed with other people’s have proved groundless. Improved efficiency with less empty vehicle miles is already being realized, reducing the environmental footprint of the BT transport fleet accor-dingly.

This is but one of the examples of best practice identified by the bestLog Project. You can find the complete BT-Case-Study including detailed information, as well as further case studies, on the bestLog platform, www.bestlog.org the website of one of the biggest Logistic Projects fi-nanced by the European Commission. BestLog aims to improve logistics practice and educa-tion in Europe. Amongst other things, bestLog will be organizing a series of workshops throughout 2009, and will publish further case studies. A book dealing with “Sustainable Supply Chain Management” including solution and best practice recommendations for logistics practitioners is in preparation.
