Internet trade spurred parcel business of Austrian Post

Austrian Post is facing a new annual record in parcel volume; on December 17 more than 429,000 parcels were distributed

Last Tuesday has entered the company history of Austrian Post: Nationwide 429,026 parcels went through the hands of the postmen. Never before they delivered as many parcels on a single day. „Modern technology and especially the tireless efforts of the staff made this record possible,“ the company states in a press release.

For years growing online trade has been increasing the amount of parcels at the Post. And before Christmas, the number of parcels shipped increases even further: Whereas this year on average 250,000 parcels were shipped per day, it has been around 350,000 parcels per day in the past weeks.

„Previous to this year, these figures would not have been possible. Through our investment in new technology and new distribution centers, such as in the north of Vienna or in Hall in Tyrol, we can now process these quantities,“ says DI Peter Umundum, head of the Parcel & Logistics division of Post.

In the coming days the Post could set new records, because more Christmas shopping is done on the internet this year. „Thus, a new December-best value is possible. A new annual record is as good as certain,“ forecasts Peter Umundum.
