Kombiverkehr: Increase in eastern and southeast European transport

International transport is the driving growth at Kombiverkehr in 2014; Rail operator Kombiverkehr continues to count on strong growth abroad and stable volumes in Germany

In 2013, Kombiverkehr Deutsche Gesellschaft für kombinierten Güterverkehr mbH & Co KG, operator in intermodal transport headquartered in Frankfurt am Main, had been able to stop the decline in volumes caused by economic factors in 2012, and actually reversed the trend with a 1.1 per cent increase in consignments. This cautious recovery continued in the first few months of 2014. „As the operator of Europe’s largest range of train services for intermodal transport, the sustained economic recovery in the Eurozone is of particular benefit to us. However, intense competition from road haulage companies is keeping growth rates down,“ Robert Breuhahn, managing director of Kombiverkehr outlines the current situation.

The eastern and southeast European axis recorded a fall of 17.9 per cent to 98,822 consignments (197,600 TEU) in 2013. The main reason behind this development was the intensified price war due to surplus capacity on the roads. Even though product quality and the range of services were in fact increased to some extent, volumes fell in four of five countries on this axis, namely in Austria, Poland, Slovenia and the Czech Republic. Only Hungary managed to increase volumes. The rise of 15.3 per cent to 14,958 consignments.

Once again, international transport is driving growth at Kombiverkehr KG in 2014. „We expect volumes of national transport to be stable over the year as a whole. However, the demand for international rail transport services continues to be so strong that we expect another slight increase in the overall number of consignments transported in 2014, in spite of being under a lot of pressure from the competition,“ Breuhahn says optimistically.

The year 2014 is thus a virtually seamless continuation of the previous year’s trends. Kombiverkehr shifted 937,671 truck consignments (about 1.88 million TEU) from road to rail in 2013 – 10,459 more long-distance truckloads than in 2012. Whilst national volumes stagnated at 217,841 consignments (435,700 TEU) (-0.8 per cent), the number of international shipments rose by 1.7 per cent to 719,830 (1.44 million TEU). The company achieved a stable turnover of 425.6 million euros (up 0.25 per cent) with 148 employees.
