Kombiverkehr launches “maritime” service to Turkey

Kombiverkehr introduces new service from Germany via Trieste to Asian part of Istanbul

Frankfurt-based Kombiverkehr KG, provider of Europe’s largest network for intermodal transport, and their partner companies Cemat and Adria Kombi will launch a new service between Germany and Turkey from the start of October, and an additional operation to Greece.

The new service combines rail and ship transport. Three weekly shuttle trains will connect Frankfurt/Main, Ludwigshafen and the Adriatic port of Trieste. Semitrailers, containers and swap bodies are then forwarded on a ferry to Patras, Greece, or the Turkish ports of Tekirdag (central harbour city in the European part) and Pendik (Istanbul). Moreover the new rail services from and to Germany are also suitable for local shipments in the region of Trieste.

„More economic locations in Germany, Benelux and Northern Europe can be linked through the transhipment of the cargo units at the gateway terminal Ludwigshafen to the new service. While mixed passenger and freight ferries of the Minoan Lines ferry shipping company are used for the transport from and to Greece, Turkish operations are carried out with freight ferries of the U.N. RO-RO shipping line“, Kombiverkehr informs.

Kombiverkehr KG is an intermodal operator marketing an international rail network, providing the benefits of rail, road and maritime vessels to forwarding and transport companies. The company’s schedule offers more than 170 train departures and more than 15,000 connections throughout Europe per night. In 2012 they shifted a total of 927,212 truck shipments (1.85 million TEU) from road to rail. Their 145 full time-employees generated annual turnover of EUR 425 million.
