LH Cargo mastered the year 2011 despite global overcapacities

Lufthansa Cargo posts record tonnage in 2011 thanks to marketing capacities in Austrian Airlines aircraft:

Lufthansa Cargo AG is looking back on a decent year 2011. Transported tonnage amounted to 1.9 million tons (up 5 per cent on 2010) – a record level. The traffic region Europe accounted for 634,000 tons.

The airline raised its capacity over the twelve months by 8.6 per cent. The increase is chiefly attributable to the integration of the capacities of aircraft in the fleet of Austrian Airlines and the expansion to eight Boeing 777 freighters in the fleet of the AeroLogic joint venture. Sales of revenue freight-tonne kilometres rose 6.5 per cent; capacity utilisation declined from 70.9 per cent in the previous year to 69.5 per cent.

“Especially in our German home market, we made full use of strong export demand to gain market shares. The economic climate in the important Asian airfreight market became increasingly bleak over the course of the year and led to over-capacities and increased competition for all airlines in the airfreight industry,” observed Lufthansa Cargo CEO and Chairman Karl Ulrich Garnadt.
