Logistikum in Steyr launches new project to promote river shipping

Logistics institute of the Upper Austrian University of Applied Sciences and 18 project partners explore ways for Danube riparian states to boost river shipping

Logistikum in Steyr, Austria, is the research- and education institute of the Upper Austrian University of Applied Sciences, has become a partner of a research project to promote environmentally friendly transport on inland waterways. The institute adds its expertise from the research field of transport logistics. The project as such is based on the cooperation of 18 partner institutions from eight Danube riparian states in the course of a two-years research project called HINT (Harmonized Inland Navigation Transport).

The overall objective of the EU-funded project is to work together to promote inland waterway transport and to increase the utilisation of waterways. In addition to raising  awareness for this environmentally-friendly transport mode and training concepts for nautical staff, the focus lies on the development of teaching materials for schools and the tertiary sector. HINT is aimed to spread knowledge about navigation and related job opportunities, and win young people’s interest in it.

For this purpose the existing information and training centers in Romania, Austria, Croatia and Hungary will be further developed. In addition HINT serves to intensify transnational cooperation within the Danube-knowledge-network in Europe, currently consisting of nearly 100 educational and training institutions, authorities and companies.

The Logistikum in Steyr, Austria, is the research- and education institute of the Upper Austrian University of Applied Sciences in the field of logistics and corporate networks. The research and development activities at the Logistikum were established in 2006, and involve today about 300 students (bachelor and master), 30 research associates, 10 professors and about 60 lecturers.
