Cross-border project SANSIBAS: gABIS comparation tool shows economically reasonable shifting potential for rail freight transport

As of 31 March 2015 gABIS, the newly developed railway terminal information system was completed. gABIS is also a marketplace for railway sidings, a cost comparison tool for rail and road transport and allows an evaluation of railway siding locations. The innovative online portal supports experts and practitioners with services and system solutions from geoinformatics and is now available at www.sansibas.eu

The just launched online platform has been created as part of the cross-border project SANSIBAS (rail freight and sidings in Bavaria and Salzburg) to strengthen rail freight in Berchtesgaden and Salzburg and to relieve the road from truck transport within the EuRegio region. It consists of three components.

Module 1: Location indicators for the evaluation of commercial locations – In order to secure existing and potential business locations with potential rail connections, an evaluation model for the analysis of commercial areas has been developed. This was based on the identification of the location indicators for the environment of a site, such as the distance to the next rail siding, zoning or sites of transportaffine companies. As a result, location-developers will be given a valuable tool for the evaluation of commercial locations.

Module 2: Web portal for the marketing of sidings – gABIS enables operators of connecting railways to digitally capture their siding in varying levels of detail and advertise spare capacity of their infrastructure for external shipments by third parties. gABIS also offer an active search for sidings. Shippers or manufacturing companies without own siding can search for „open“ ones, ie rail sidingds open to third parties, looking in the source or target region. In case of short-notice cargo volumes producers, shippers and carriers can react more flexible with gABIS than before. The goal is to use existing infrastructure together. Thus, transport costs can be reduced and loading facilities will be increased for all participating companies.

Module 3: Cost comparison tool – Another component of the project is a cost calculation and comparison tool for potential rail transport methods. So it can easily and directly be examined which transport variants cause which costs, and allows to compare rail and road transport. The quick comparison of variants serves as a first decision basis for further detailed examination. „With the help of gABIS operators can better market and operate their siding more efficiently. Shippers and companies without sidings can search for ways to transport their goods by rail. In addition, the comparison tool shows an example of economically reasonable shifting potential for the rail. The comparison tool is available to experts and interested public and free of charge,“ said Stefan Krampe, CEO of TraffiCon and developer of the web portal, about the advantages of gABIS.
