McDonald’s honours Havi Logistics’ global sustainability strategy

Havi Logistics obtains the Best of Sustainable Supply 2014 award for its program for resource-conserving and climate-neutral warehousing and transport logistics

Havi Logistics has won the Best of Sustainable Supply 2014 award. McDonald´s awards this prize to honour suppliers for environmental protection projects worldwide. A jury formed by representatives of the global McDonald´s management and external experts – e.g. from the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) – prized 51 environmental projects from 36 service providers as very sustainable. In total more than 600 applications had been submitted. Havi Logistics, Lead Logistics Provider for McDonald´s for more than 30 years, won the prize in the Climate Change and Energy category.

Sustainability has been among the key objectives of Havi Logistics since the beginning. The question of how storage and transport can be designed as resource-conserving and climate-neutrally as possible, was the starting point for the launch of the company’s global initiative „Efficient and Sustainable Logistics“ (ESL) in 2012, which has now been prized.

First, this international ESL team established the energy consumption and CO2 emissions of 70 distribution centers in 33 countries. Then Havi Logistics developed and implemented a road map for ten environmental protection initiatives in more than 30 countries in Europe and Asia. This was in line with achieving the objective of reducing energy consumption during storage and transport by nine per cent and CO2 emissions per tonne by 17.2 per cent until 2017.

Havi Logistics names itself “the global lead logistics provider“ of the food service industry. Since the company with its headquarters in Duisburg was established in November 1981, it has been dealing with distribution of food- and non-food items according to a one-stop-shopping concept. Its 5,746 employees at more than 60 European distribution centres are organising the supply of quick service restaurants, shops at fuel stations and catering enterprises. The customers include among others McDonald’s, BP, Compass Group, Ikea, Nordsee, OMV, Statoil, Vapiano and Rimi.
