Memorable anniversary: Free Port of Trieste exists for 300 years
Since 1719 goods have been handled in the Free Port of Trieste. With just under 10,000 trains a year, the location is already coping with a considerable volume of rail traffic. However, Zeno D’Agostino, president of the Port System Authority of the Eastern Adriatic Sea, still sees room for improvement.
He announces a comprehensive package of measures to modernize, optimize and supplement the existing rail infrastructure both in the port and in the catchment area of the city of Trieste. Thus, a new station is being built at Campo Marzio for EUR 100 million.
In addition, the Cervignano and Villa Opicina freight centers on the Italian-Slovenian border are planning to establish two advanced railway junctions. If all goes well, the annual capacity for rail logistics in the Trieste region will grow to around 25,000 trains by 2023.
“We want to grow continuously,” explains Zeno D’Agostino. In order to ensure that, the container terminal on the Molo VII will be expanded by EUR 200 million in two stages to 1.3 million TEU annual capacity. The first construction phase is scheduled to start in 2019.
