Mercitalia and PKP strengthen the railway between Italy and Poland

Mercitalia Rail, a subsidiary of the Italian rail company FS Italiane, and the Polish PKP subsidiary PKP Cargo plan to expand rail transport on the TEN-T Baltic-Adriatic corridor. The two companies signed a contract in the middle of the week at the Economic Forum 2018 in Krynica, Poland.

The strategic alliance aims to provide reliable and efficient rail freight transport services between Italy and Poland. A joint working group of representatives of both companies will define the concrete principles of cooperation in the coming months. Their aim is to create innovative solutions for freight transport by rail in response to the increasing demands of customers.

“This agreement is particularly important for the strategic positioning of Polo Mercitalia,” said Gian Paolo Gotellli, CEO of Mercitalia Rail. “We have no operational overlaps with the PKP Group and can work closely together to develop new services on the Baltic-Adriatic Rail Corridor, both for conventional and intermodal transport, which shows very strong growth from and to the port of Trieste. So we can work together with a strong partner not only in Poland, but also in the Czech Republic. Through access to intermodal and conventional terminals in Poland, we can also develop the transport of goods by rail on the east-west corridor to the CIS and China. In return, we provide PKP with our facilities and services in Italy.”

According to the company, Polo Mercitalia is one of the major Italian players in the European logistics and freight market. Mercitalia Rail is the largest rail freight company in Italy and one of the largest in Europe.
