Metrans starts serving Nuremberg and Munich

New Metrans train connects the seaport of Hamburg with two south-German container terminals on a regular basis

HHLA subsidiary Metrans and bayernhafen group are boosting the shift of container traffic from road to rail. Since 14 January 2013 a Metrans train carries containers from the seaport of Hamburg to the container terminal in bayernhafen Nuremberg twice weekly (Mondays and Wednesdays). Arriving in Nuremberg on Tuesdays and Thursdays, respectively, the train continues its journey at noon to Munich before returning to Munich again. From 4 February 2013 the train will be operated five times per week.

The new connection between the coast and Bavaria is part of the “Hafen Hamburg 62 +“project, which had been initiated by Hafen Hamburg Marketing, LKZ Prien GmbH and bayernhafen group in 2012, on behalf of shifting more container transportations between Hamburg and Bavaria from road to railway. Today about 62 per cent of the annual volume of 690,000 TEU transported between Hamburg and Bavaria are carried on the railway. The target is to further increase the share of the railway.
