New exhaust gas-badges for trucks in Austria from 1 January 2015

New exhaust gas-badge is required for truck trips in eastern Austria and on the major routes towards Hungary, Slovakia, Slovenia and Croatia from January

From 1 January 2015 all domestic or foreign trucks and semitrailers of the Euro classes II to VI have to have an Austrian exhaust gas-badge, if they enter certain regions of the country. The reason therefore are fiercer driving bans for reasons of environmental protection due to the Austrian immission control law on trucks in Vienna, in the eastern part of Lower Austria, in Burgenland and parts of Styria. The badge will be required for trips on motorways and expressways towards Hungary, Slovakia, Slovenia and Croatia.

The badges are issued at appraisal units according to the § 57 a Austrian Law on Motor Vehicles, such as workshops, driver clubs and vehicle inspection authorities of the Austrian provinces. In Germany – and other countries – the badge can not be obtained due to legal reasons, which is also why it is not available online. The exhaust gas-badge must be picked up in Austria. However, it is possible to apply for a badge via e-mail in advance, indicating the pollutant class of the relevant vehicle, at various providers, such as the locations of the Austrian driver club ÖAMTC and the locations of DEKRA Austria Automotive GmbH. The price for the issue of such a badge ranges from EUR 20 to 25.

The German forwarding and logistics association DSLV Deutsche Speditions- und Logistikverband recommends to equip all trucks operating in Austria with a badge, as further Austrian provinces have already announced similar driving bans for reasons of environmental protection. Exhaust gas / environmental protection badges of other countries are not valid in Austria.
