Threat of a new setback for rail cargo transport in Burgenland

Austrian railways ÖBB applied at the Ministry of Transport for shutdown of the cargo railway between Deutschkreutz and Oberloisdorf

Cargo transport on the rail is further thinning out in eastern Austria. The railway between Oberwart and Friedberg might be ceased. The same applies to the segment between Deutschkreutz and Oberloisdorf. ÖBB applied at the Ministry of Transport for the closure of this route, as reports the regional TV ORF Burgenland.

From the ÖBB’s point of view cargo transport between Deutschkreutz and Oberloisdorf is not profitable at all. Currently only one cargo train is operated per day. The Esterhazy company transports wood, the Lagerhaus branches transport agricultural products. Lagerhaus Unterpullendorf moves around 20,000 tonnes on the rail per year. In case of closure of this route, this cargo volume must be transported on the road.

Regional politicians show commitment to maintain the rail cargo transport. Their hope is based on another operator. However it is difficult to reach alternative solutions, says Landesverkehrskoordinator Peter Zinggl. This was only possible if companies and municipalities are involved.
