New major project for global automotive logistics in the duisport

The duisport sets another milestone in global automotive logistics. On 31 May the logistics provider DB Schenker, and the port operator Duisburger Hafen AG, celebrated the symbolic ground-breaking ceremony for the construction of a new large logistics center. Duisburger Hafen AG is the owner and has the facility built. The areas and buildings will be leased to DB Schenker.

The new location offers substantial dimensions and has great strategic relevance. After Schenker Deutschland AG had received the contract from Daimler for the handling of the parts and components logistics in the port of Duisburg, duisport has made available a land parcel measuring approximately 100,000 m² on the Mercatorinsel in the Ruhrort port area.

duisport will build a 25,000 m² industrial building complex and a 1,500 m² office complex on the land parcel this year. The site also offers potential for further expansion. The location is in the immediate vicinity of existing container handling facilities for the further transport of the Daimler components

Dr. Thomas Böger, Head of Contract Logistics/SCM of Schenker Deutschland AG, said: “We are very proud to enter a new level of logistics partnership with our long-standing customer Daimler. The convincing overall concept of process experience and an ideal location with an optimal connection to an inland port have enabled this step. At the same time, we are delighted to finally be represented with its own large contract logistics facility in the important logistical hotspot of duisport. For us, the duisport project is another major move to expand our contract logistics business.”

Joachim Stern, Managing Director Logistics for the Rhine region of Schenker Deutschland AG, emphasised on the economically positive effect for the entire region: “As part of the first construction stage, we will create qualified jobs for around 200 employees at the new location in duisport. We are consolidating our logistical presence and our role as a major employer in the Rhine-Ruhr metropolitan region.”

Dr. Jörg Homering, Daimler AG, Manager Supply Mercedes-Benz Vans added: “We celebrate a significant milestone in our long-term cooperation with DB Schenker. The groundbreaking ceremony is the result of a successful cooperation for us, and of the continued business partnerships. The strategic location of the new logistics center in the port of Duisburg with its excellent connections and short distances to the domestic terminal provides excellent conditions for optimal support of our global business.”
