Transport Minister Doris Bures has stressed on Wednesday as part of a dialogue session with the representatives of the aviation industry, the importance of the hub function of the Vienna airport. „The aviation industry is of crucial importance for Austria as a location for tourism, Vienna as a conference location, creating thousands of jobs. The Vienna airport has developed into an important European transport junction. To maintain this, we have to react to changes and actively take measures in order to compete in the future,“ she said in a statement.

One of these measures, which were implemented as part of the „Road Map aviation in 2020,“ is the study „The Austrian aviation sector in the context of Austria as a business location „. This analysis created by the British transport consultant company Steer Davies Gleave was presented at the dialogue session. It explains possible future scenarios for the Austria as a location for the acviation industry, particularly Vienna. In order to keep the status of the Vienna International Airport as a major hub in Central Europe and to enable future growth, the location study recommends the construction of the third runway.
