Danube Soya Initiative opens office in Serbia

GMO-free and quality soya of safe origin from the Danube region can give new impetus to the river shipping industry

The Danube Soya Initiative, founded two years ago, enters a new stage by recently opening a new office in Novi Sad. The Serbian region of Vojvodina counts among the most progressive and best-developed regions where soya is cultivated and for research. Cultivation of soy beans in Vojvodina has covered 155,000 hectares in 2013.

For the construction of offices, regional and agricultural projects in Bosnia and Serbia, as well as for the care of members, the association was able to win Marija Kalentic. The agronomist has nine years of professional experience in the agricultural sector in Serbia. For six years she had been Senior Project Manager of the Access project for the Development of the private sector of GIZ.

Danube Soya, headquartered in Vienna is a nonprofit, independent organisation with almost 150 members. The initiative stands for GMO-free, quality soy of safe origin in the Danube region. The objective is to improve conditions for successful soybean cultivation in Europe and to minimise the soybean import from overseas.

The 2013 harvest yielded 40,000 tonnes of certified Danube soy. For other projects, as well as the certification of edible soy, it needs more of regionally produced soy. Serbia plays a fundamental role in 2014 to exceed the 200,000 ton mark.
