OOCL records losses on Europe-trades

Container shipping company OOCL had to face volume losses in the 2013 calendar year on Asia/Europe and Trans-Atlantic trades

Liner shipping company Orient Overseas Container Line (Hong Kong) had to accept volume losses on important trades in the 2013 calendar year. Cargo volume moved worldwide amounted to 5.29 million TEU, which is 1.5 per cent above the previous year’s figure, but the Asia/Europe trade showed a decline of 4.7 per cent to 843,652 TEU and Trans Atlantic trades decreased 3.2 per cent to 394,842 TEU.

These losses were absorbed by strong growth on Intra-Asia/Australasian trades. OOCL vessels carried 2.82 million TEU there during the reporting period, meaning up 5.6 per cent. As the Hong Kong-based member of the G6 Alliance announced, 2013 annual turnover amounted to about USD 5.6 billion, which is down 4.9 per cent year-on-year. The overall load factor remained the same. Average revenue per TEU were 6.3 per cent below the last year’s figure.

Looking at the fourth quarter 2013, volume grew 10 per cent year-on-year, but total turnover declined by 1.6 per cent to USD 1.4 billion. Cargo capacity rose 2.9 per cent, while the load factor was 4.9 per cent above the figure of the fourth quarter 2012. Average revenue per TEU dropped by 10.5 per cent in the reference period.
