OPDR has become a lifeline for the Canary Islands

100 years of the shipping company OPDR’s regular liner service connecting Northern Europe to the Canary Islands

100 years ago the short sea shipping company Oldenburg-Portugiesische Dampfschiffs-Rhederei (OPDR) launched its regular liner service between the Canary Islands and Northern Europe. What started as pure export trade of bananas from the Canary Islands to Northern Europe, has become the lifeline of more than two million Canarian inhabitants and over ten million tourists per year.

At the beginning of this year they opened new own offices on the Canary Islands. Headed by Klaus Elsner, they focus on the export of fresh local products such as tomatoes, bananas, papayas and avocados. As is one of the biggest logistic companies on the Canary Islands OPDR provides up to four weekly calls in the ports of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, Santa Cruz de Tenerife as well as Arrecife (Lanzarote).

“With only five days of transit between Felixstowe and Santa Cruz de Tenerife, OPDR offers the fastest connection to the Canary Islands in the market”, says Till Ole Barrelet, CEO of the OPDR Group. “Today we are able to offer our customers integrated supply chain solutions including trucking, warehousing and customs clearance.”

Oldenburg-Portugiesische Dampfschiffs-Rhederei with headquarters in Hamburg has been offering customised logistics services in Europe as well as from and to Africa for more than 130 years. The enterprise has an extensive network across more than 20 European as well as North and West African countries. As a company of the Bernhard Schulte Group they employ a staff of 200 persons ashore in Europe and a staff of 100 at sea.
