PKP Cargo has signed a big contract with ArcelorMittal Group

PKP Cargo will realize services worth EUR 240 million for ArcelorMittal Group; the yearly rail transport volume can reach 35 million tons

In the coming three years the Polish rail carrier PKP Cargo will transport almost 35 million tons of goods for companies from the ArcelorMittal Group. This is stated in annexes to agreements for transport of goods for the key player in steel industry, which were signed by PKP Cargo on 28 April. The contract value comes up to PLN 1 billion.

The signed agreements mean that PKP Cargo and ArcelorMittal will continue their cooperation to June 2017 at least. The yearly volume of loads transported for the ArcelorMittal Group will come up to minimum 11 million tons as it can reach 35 million tons. As a comparison in 2013 the PKP Cargo Group transported totally 114 million tons of loads for all customers.

PKP Cargo transports coal, coke, lignite, ores and pyrites, stone, gravel and limestone, metals and chemical products for several companies from the ArcelorMittal Group, including ArcelorMittal Poland SA, ArcelorMittal Warszawa Sp. z o.o. and ArcelorMittal Ostrawa SA. The segment of transports for companies from the steel industry is key for PKP CARGO’s activity – apart from the ArcelorMittal Group, the company renders services for CMC, US Steel and many others.

“Despite the slow-down on steel markets and global metal production we transport more ores. Only in the first quarter of 2014 the increase in this segment came up to about  20 per cent annualised. It shows the capacity of our Group to adjust to changeable market conditions,” explains Jacek Neska, Board Member for Commercial Issues in PKP Cargo highlighted.

PKP Cargo has resources and competencies which allow complex customer service, which is especially important in steel industry, due to varied types of transported materials and their parameters. Apart from standard orders the company realizes transports of oversize loads and direct international connections. Currently PKP Cargo is the only carrier in Poland who has specialized rolling stock for transporting  120-meter rail, which has been produced since February 2014 by ArcelorMittal in Dąbrowa Górnicza.
